The green meadows along the Demer River form the vast Demerbroeken nature reserve. Here, you can walk through reed beds, hayfields, and deciduous forests in an unspoiled floodplain. It’s the perfect place to escape into the greenery behind Ernest Claes’s birthplace. Incidentally, the writer drew a great deal of inspiration from his walks through the Demerbroeken. Floere the weasel, a stone marten from his body of work, makes his home here.
Before you set out: Follow the junction markers of the Wandelnetwerk de Merode or the signs with a red triangle.
