Your hike through the Koudenbergbeek Valley begins at Affligem Abbey, where nature is given free rein. Thanks to the varied soil—dry and wet, sandy loam and clay—you’ll find some very rare wildlife here. And what about those robber barons? The name refers to the legend of the founding of the Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul in Affligem. The story goes that Monk Wedericus of St. Peter’s Abbey in Ghent converted six robber barons who settled in Affligem in 1062.
