The “Witloofboerke” statue waves goodbye to you at your starting point, in the heart of Kampenhout. The sculpture by Luc Mathijs is a tribute to the farmers who turned Kampenhout into a true chicory village. Chicory cultivation took hold in the villages east of Brussels in the late 19th century, and farmers still grow chicory using the traditional open-field method. In season, you can buy a box of chicory here straight from the farmer. If you’d like to savor the region a little longer, stop by Café Het Labo at Van Campenhout Brewery, known for its local Witlov beers.
