The Basilica of Our Lady has attracted visitors to Scherpenheuvel for centuries. To this day, it is the most visited pilgrimage church in Belgium and the oldest domed church in the Low Countries. The basilica was consecrated in 1627. The striking dome is decorated with 298 golden seven-pointed stars and overlooks the characteristic seven-sided square. Around the basilica burn a candle in the candle chapel, and - especially - in the Marian month of May, the square bustles with pilgrims, atmosphere and stalls selling souvenirs and local products.
