The Demerbroeken form a vast chunk of nature in the wide valley of the Demer, between Testelt, Zichem, Averbode and Diest. For centuries this landscape was used as hay land and by peat cutters, which left traces in the fens and quaking fens. You hike through open grasslands, wet marsh forests and along quiet ponds. Writer Ernest Claes also found his inspiration here. The backyard of his birthplace borders the Demerbroeken, where he undoubtedly saw the stone marten Floere het fluwijn hopping around.
