The Leuven Town Hall is considered one of the most refined Gothic town halls in the world and has been the proud face of the town for centuries. Around 1450 it was built on the newly laid out Grote Markt, about the same time as St. Peter's Church. The richly decorated facade has 236 niches, populated with princes, scholars and Leuven icons such as Erasmus and Vesalius. Inside, the walkway functioned as a covered market hall and courtroom. After restoration, the town hall will reopen as a public house in 2029.
