10 beers straight from the kettle

From the brew kettle, straight into your glass—it doesn’t get much better than that. Whether you want to take a brewery tour or just pop into a place to soak up the atmosphere, there’s plenty to choose from in Flemish Brabant. At these ten spots, you can sample delicious beer among vats and kettles.

1. De Cam

Geuze maker Karel ages young lambic in oak barrels that are over a hundred years old. He then blends and bottles them into geuze and surprising fruit beers. He gives tours every Sunday afternoon. Groups of 15 or more by appointment only.

2. Oud-Beersel

The Oud-Beersel Geuze Brewery has been a household name in Beersel since 1882. You can visit every Saturday, or with a group by appointment. Afterward, enjoy a beer tasting at the Bierhuis, where you’ll also find delicious regional dishes on the menu.

3. Sweynbeer

For a century, the guild hall has played a central role in community life in Elewijt. And now once again, it serves as the home of the Sweynbeer brewery. On Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons, you can just walk right in for a tasting among the kettles; for a guided tour, it’s best to reserve in advance.

4. HUB Brewers

The name of the farm brewery ’t Guldenhooft has been around since 1694, located near Gaasbeek Castle. Bob Huysman—Bob the Brewer—restored the dilapidated farmhouse and revived the old brewing tradition using local ingredients. He enjoys giving guided tours of the brewery to groups of ten or more.

5. Haacht Brewery

In 1898, Eugène De Ro brewed his first top-fermented beer. Four generations later, Haacht Brewery is an independent family-owned brewery producing beers such as Primus, Tongerlo, Ommegang, and Super 8.

6. Den Druppel

What began as a hobby project for three friends grew into a cozy microbrewery overlooking an old branch of the Demer River.

7. ’t Nieuwhuys

The oldest stone building in Hoegaarden is a cozy café, restaurant, and brewery where Alpaide and Rosdel beers are served fresh on tap.

8. De Vlier Brewery

Every Saturday, brewer Marc Andries opens his tasting room, offering a brief explanation of his beers along with a few local delicacies.

9. Van Campenhout

Kris and Mieke continue the family tradition of brewing. At Het Labo—the former brewery laboratory—you can sample their Witlov beers.

10. Domus

The craft house beers flow through a copper pipe directly from the brewery to the tap, right in the historic heart of Leuven.
