Street Art Young Race Violence

The love of racing immortalized in 10 murals

We can race in Flemish Brabant. World champions such as Eddy Merckx, Sven Nys and Remco Evenepoel grew up on Flemish Brabant soil and ensured that this region has held the race in its heart for years.

For example, the jersey he wears is the one with which he won his first Tour de France and the cap is the one with which he won his last Tour. Merckx's well-known nicknames are incorporated into the background in the form of newspaper headlines. The number "525" refers to the total number of stage victories of his career, which to this day still earns him the title of best cyclist of all time.

4. Street art DIEST

Artiest: Han Coussement

📍 Kluisbergstraat, 3290 Diest

🚴 Dwars door het Hageland gravel route- 80 km
🚲 Reynvaertroute- 42 km

The abstract work of a cyclist amidst a cloud of dust, makes you dream away to the race 'Dwars door het Hageland', which descends on Diest during late spring. The composition radiates a lot of speed but also the roughness and action of gravel cycling. This as a representation of the pleasure of a good dirty gravel ride. The long narrow horizontal plane and image are used in such a way that it can play out like a movie in passing or just by looking at it. The idea is to sense the moment. As a result, the viewer will oscillate between the feeling of the moment on the bike and the aesthetics of a mural.

5. Street art BREWERY PALM in Steenhuffel

Muurschildering van een ridder met een fiets op de gevel van brouwerij Palm.
Artiest: Sam Billen

📍 Palm Brewery, Steenhuffel village 1, 1840 Londerzeel

🚴 Cornet Gravel Road- 117 km
🚲 Diepensteyn Route - 40 km

The artwork 'The steel cyclist' shows the Cornet knight carrying his steel steed on his shoulders. The bicycle is both his weapon and his shield. His velvet, green cloak is a nod to Palm. The static pose and intimidating gaze exude pure strength and determination with the monumental statue being a real eye-catcher. The color palette and balanced composition make the mural blend with its surroundings.

🚴 Sven Nys Little Cannibal Route- 46 km

Artist Sam Billen's work breathes cyclocross. A few riders hunched over their handlebars, plow their way through the tunnel. Central to the work is the Cannibal of Baal, enjoying his sport. The mud, as it were, splashes off the artwork.

7. Street art REMCO EVENEPOEL

Muurschildering van wielrenner Remco Evenepoel op de gevel van een huis.
Artiest: Sam Billen

🚲 Lambic-Sun route - 51 km (artwork is 40m from bike route)
🥾 Four-village walk - 11.3 km (artwork is 40m from walking route)

The artwork "Rainbow Remco : Aerobullet" shows a monumental portrait of top talent Remco Evenepoel. The portrait radiates strength and looks forward, towards the future. The portrait incorporates the colors of the rainbow jersey, as Remco became world champion both on the road and in the individual time trial at a young age. Remco is also Belgian champion on the road, hence the Belgian tricolor in the artwork. The motion blur in the tricolor comes from the silhouette of Remco racing in his typical, recognizable pose on a time trial bike (the rear wheel of the bike is also a chronometer). Thanks to this posture, Remco is also nicknamed "Aerobullet," which also appears as an inscription on his bicycle helmet.

After a solo of just under 30km, Jasper Stuyven was the first to win the Belgian and European gravel titles. Hence the jersey of the Belgian tricolor and the stars in the blue stripe, in reference to these titles.
