Sidy Hanssens is continuing a tradition that began with her great-grandfather Bartholomé. Together with her husband John, she brews Oude Geuze, Geuze Extra, Oude Kriek, Schaarbeekse Kriek and fruit lambic using traditional methods. Always with fresh fruit, without any fruit juices. Sustainability is also important: the brewery collects 18,000 litres of rainwater to clean the vats, and solar panels provide green energy.

Story
“The oldest family-run geuze blender in the world,” says Sidy Hanssens. And she’s right. The story began with her great-grandfather Bartholomé Hanssens, who founded the Sint Antonius Brewery. Originally, they didn’t brew lambic, but a brown table beer.
During the First World War, the Germans confiscated all the copperware. In 1918, Bartholomé decided not to restart the brewery, but from then on to simply purchase wort and blend it. The Hanssens family passed this tradition down from father to son and to daughter. Since 1997, Sidy has been at the helm of Hanssens Artisanaal in the beautiful brewhouse in Dworp.
Together with her husband John, she brews traditional classics such as Oude Geuze, Geuze Extra, Oude Kriek, Schaarbeekse Kriek and fruit lambic. For the fruit beers, they use only fresh fruit, no juices, and the Schaarbeekse kriek cherries come from their own region. Sustainability is a priority here: the brewery collects 18,000 litres of rainwater in large tanks to clean the vats, the barrel store is insulated and solar panels provide green energy.
